The Starnberger Lake is the second largest lake in Bavaria and one of the most important recreation areas at the foot of the Alps and Pfaffenwinkels. The lake is also called “Fürstensee” and it is 21 km long, up to 5 km wide and 127 m deep.
Villages Seeshaupt, Antdorf, Habach & Sindelsdorf are situated at the shores of the Starnberger Lake. They have preserved their traditional architecture and beautiful pristine nature.
The nature reserve -Oster Lakes adjoins in the south, nearby Iffeldorf. The unique moor landscape consists of 19 small lakes, tears of the Starnberger Lake.
South of the Starnberger Lake starches the landscape of rolling hills, dark forests and pit meadows, formed by the Würmtal glacier in the last ice age. From there one can enjoy a most rewarding view of the magnificent chain of Bavarian Alps.
Penzberg, the former mining town and today’s economic center of the region, is a lively contrast to this nature reserve. Another jewel of the region is the baroque monastery in Benediktbeuern, which is also a well-known educational institution.
Despite being unknown for long time, Starnberger and Oster lakes have developed into a popular leisure area in the Munich area. However, the quietness and tranquility have largely returned after the Oster lakes got declared a protected landscape area.
The TV series “Images of a Landscape” by Gabriele Dinsenbacher, shows an enchanted little world of the lakes:“In the Beer Garden of Hohenkasten”, “In the Castle Hohenberg with the Princesses of Thurn and Taxis”, “The Ox Race in Münsing”, “In the Beautifully Situated Hospital “Lauterbacher Mühle”, “In the Baroque Church of Maria in Heuwinkel by Iffeldorf” or “The Gardens of Weidenkam Castle. These episodes show beautifully some places around the Oster Lakes in the late summer.
